India is now being faced with 'double disease' burden of communicable
and non- communicable diseases. Communicable diseases contributes to almost 60 -
70% of the morbidity and mortality in the country. Various state as well as national
health programs, rural and urban health care services, public and private health
care delivery system; surveillance activities are all working in isolation. There
has been no up gradation of laboratory system starting from periphery to state level.
This is also true in terms of connectivity. Involvement of medical colleges is yet
to play a vital role. Considering all these important domains of communicable and
non-communicable diseases, the Institute of Health Management Research, Bangalore has developed a local as well as state level intervention models including
training programs for state level health managers, mid level managers, doctors from
reputed Hospital, laboratory personnel, and para-medical personnel.
In addition
a plan of action is available for NGOs to play an important role in this surveillance
project.
